Cause of Acne

Acne is caused by the excess of androgens that occurs during puberty. These androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin to produce sebum [the naturally produced oil that keeps the skin healthy]. Excess sebum can block the ducts of the sebaceous glands in the skin that produces it and results in acne.

It is important to remember that
there are nearly 17 million people in the United States with acne. Acne is the most common skin disease, you are not alone.

Essential fatty acids are fats in the diet that help control the production of androgens. Essential fatty acids are important in the production of prostaglandins. It is via prostaglandin production that essential fatty acids keep androgen production under control.

Unfortunately not all foods contain these essential fatty acids.

In the management of acne, three essential fatty acids are important; Omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.

Eating the right diet is important in providing the essential fatty acids necessary to combat acne.

Good sources of essential fatty acids include
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: green leafy vegetables, Sesame seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Avocado, seafood [tuna, salmon], wheat germ oil
  • Omega-6 fatty acids: Flaxseed oil, olive oil, olives, sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts, pinenuts, evening primrose oil
Taking essential fatty acids however is not enough to combat the cause of acne.

You need to take the right amounts of each fatty acid. It is recommended that you take 2 parts of omega-6 fatty acids to 1 part of omega-3 fatty acids

Also do not take an excess of either as this can result in the production of bad prostaglandins. To help combat this a diet rich in vitamins and minerals is recommended

Acne can also be caused by stress. Again the reason for this is hormone related

There are other things that can cause an out break of acne in a person who is already susceptible to acne. These are called acne triggers.

Examples vary in the individual but commonly occurring themes include emotion, certain drugs, certain food, some locations. These acne triggers cause acne by starting hormonal reactions in your body that result in excess sebum production.

Foods that have been frequently cited as causing acne flare ups include soy, dairy, chocolate and tomatoes

Again, triggers do not cause Acne per se, they just cause flare ups of acne in someone who is already prone to acne
