Acne And The Different Faces Of Acne

Acne occurs when pores or hair follicles become blocked or clogged

Acne can appear pretty much anywhere on the skin.

The worst forms of acne occur, however, on the chest and back, and most commonly on males rather than females because of hormonal differences

Acne is a skin disorder caused by the hormones action on the oil glands of the skin which is called the sebaceous glands. The oils produced by these glands can lead to blockage of the ducts [ie pores] that drain these glands to the skin surface.

Sebaceous glands are most numerous on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. This explains why these areas are most commonly affected by acne

The following are the more commonly occuring manifestations of acne: whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, nodules and scars

A whitehead occurs when the oils are and bacteria are trapped below the skin surface

In a blackhead, the duct of the gland is partly open, resulting in the trapped oil getting exposed to the melanin in skin, turning it black

A pimple is a small solid spot that is elevated above the surrounding skin

A nodule is a solid lesion that is partially buried in the skin
